Vintage Dance Company

Vintage Dance Lessons and Performers

About Vintage Dance Company

We are a company that loves the vintage styles of dancing and early jazz and we want to share the music and the dances and make them accessible to everyone.

Our purpose is to provide an authentic jazz and swing experience and to see people not only enjoy these great dances from the past, but through the dance and musical experience, be emotionally and physically freed and feel celebrated for who they are whether they are taking lessons, dancing with their partner, watching a performance, or dancing on the social floor.

We specialize in performing and teaching many of the dance styles that developed in the early 20th Century with jazz music. These dances include Charleston, Lindy Hop, Vernacular Jazz, Shag, Blues, and Balboa, though some of our dancers know other styles as well. We perform, host dance events, teach lessons, and sometimes participate in community events that offer opportunities for dancing.

Many dance studios may know a form of these old dances or the basics, but we like to make our experiences feel authentic by bringing in the spirit and the history of the dance and keeping it in mind with everything we do.

Currently, Vintage Dance Company offers social dances with a free beginner lesson, regular dance classes, dance workshops, individual and group private lessons, and performers, teachers, and DJs for private and public events.

Frequently Asked Questions

How would you define your "style"?

Our style is a fun, joy-filled, authentic vintage experience. Think dance parties (both elaborate and simple) of the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s.

What does the process of working with your company look like?

We will typically start with a conversation about what you want. What kinds of services are you interested in? What styles of music and dancing? If you want to take lessons for the first dance, what are the look, feeling, and era you’re going for? Based on your needs, wants, and availability of dancers, we will recommend the dancers we feel will best help you achieve your goal and then let you make the ultimate decision of who you want to book and which services you’d like to book. If you want to learn a style of dance or choreography, we recommend taking lessons weekly for two months, but sometimes more depending on what your goals are.

What is included in your most popular packages?

Our most popular package is our most basic one, where we give couples a few lessons on social dancing. It is a great choice for those who don’t want to spend a lot of time learning and practicing a choreography, but want to look good for their first dance.

What is a unique tip you tell your couples that is specific to your vendor category?

For your final one or two lessons, bring the shoes you’ll be wearing for your wedding to practice in!

What current trends have you seen at weddings?

We have seen a growing trend for couples wanting to provide entertainment for their guests during cocktail hour, when the bridal party is busy getting their photos or a change of wardrobe before the rest of the ceremony can commence. Some brides have chosen to offer a dance lesson for their guests. That way, they are not just entertained, they are prepared to dance when the music starts.

What advice would you give a couple who is starting the search for the perfect venue?

I can say that Wedding Venue Map makes it so much easier to find a venue! This platform or similar platforms that allow you to filter and search are a great starting place. Also, if you’ve already chosen a vendor in another category, they’ll be a great resource as they may be connected to many different venues and have probably worked on a wedding there or at least toured the site.

Amye Francis

Amye has over 7 years of experience in the dance world, focusing primarily on vintage swing styles. Amye’s passion is to use dance to create atmospheres that are fun and full of joy and freedom, whether it be through performing or through leading others to dance. When teaching and discussing dance, Amye also believes in the importance of celebrating the uniqueness of oneself and others on the dance floor.

A Little About Us

What makes you or your business stand out and why should a couple hire you?

Though we will certainly teach you footwork and moves, we believe dancing is first and foremost about bringing your own authentic self and just having fun moving to a rhythm. It really is as simple as that! We want you to shine with your unique expression! While teaching dance, we don’t get overly strict and technical on the how-tos, but rather, on feeling the music, moving to the music, and creating your own style of dance within the structure of swing. That’s how the original dancers did it! They learned from each other, but each one developed their own style and their own moves. This is the spirit of the dances we teach. We are also passionate about the history behind jazz-era swing dances and like to keep our dance experience authentic. When we perform, we bring the authentic 20’s 30’s and 40’s to you through our costumes and dance styles. When we teach, we don’t just teach you how to do the moves, we bring in the history and the spirit of the dance because it is very important to us. We like to bring the jazz and swing era to life, not just create a fun vintage-like experience. We do our research on the history behind the dances we bring, the music we play, and the clothes we wear. We have also had the incredible privilege of performing at the Mexican Consulate in Orlando for a celebration of Mexican-American relations and we have performed with the Orlando Big Band at the Steinmetz Hall in the Dr. Phillips Center. Lastly, we believe in helping others. 10% of any profit our company makes goes towards helping to save victims of the child sex trade, and sometimes to the poor.

What's a fun or unusual fact about you or your company?

We are a very diverse group of people with diverse backgrounds, ranging from scientists and engineers, to circus performers, artists and musicians, to dads and moms! We all have a passion for the dances of the 1920s – 1940s, and love to do our research on the history of the dances in that era.

How did you get started as a wedding pro?

Vintage Dance Company began by teaching group lessons and hosting social dance events. We continued to grow the business to begin offering performances and other services for special events after Amye was invited to teach a swing lesson for a wedding in her hometown.

Share a piece of advice to reduce stress in the wedding planning process.

In the end, you want your wedding day to be one of good memories. Don’t get too stressed about all the little details ending up exactly how you want them. They are great, but ultimately, people are going to remember the big picture and how you looked on your wedding day. So relax a little and have fun.

What's your favorite wedding tradition and why?

Food is a big one for me, but so is dancing, but it wasn’t always that way. I used to not dance at weddings because I didn’t think I knew how to move and I was too self-conscious. As I began to learn dance steps, that began to change and once I really understood that dancing is less about the steps and more about playing while moving to a groove or feel, I found I no longer had an excuse to not dance, no matter what was playing.

Tell us more about the couples you usually get the pleasure of working with.

We love the couples we get to work with. Most of them are eager to learn and are always happy about learning to dance with each other. Most of the time they are couples with little to no dance experience, and they are always so grateful after going through a few lessons and discovering that they can now dance!

What are some of the best compliments you've received from your clients?

Here are what some of our clients have to say: “I had a great private lesson with [Amye] today! Finally got the swivel prep step and circular swivels I’ve been wanting foreverrr. Lesson quality is AMAZING for an insanely low price !! Hit her up !!” -Bryn “Amye is a skilled, patient instructor that will work with you wherever you are at in dancing, whether you are brand new or a seasoned hoofer. Her guidance was easy to understand and I learned a great deal! Next time I’m on the floor, I’ll be far more sure of myself due to her teaching. Thank you Amye!” – Nick “[Amye’s class] was fun! My boyfriend’s never taken a dance class with me so this was the first time we got to do a lesson together.” -Julia
