While you may have meticulously planned every detail of your special day, one element that remains beyond your control is the weather. Rain on your wedding day can be seen as a symbol of good luck, but it’s essential to be prepared for any unexpected showers. In this blog, we’ll explore twelve practical tips from Rebecca Lang of L3 Events, Kelly Hunsberger of Orlando Ceremonies, and Shannon Tarrant from our very own Wedding Venue Map to help you navigate and embrace the possibility of rain on your special day.
1. Communicate with Your Venue
Ask your venue about weather back up options. Ideally this should be asked before you book your venue. However, it can still apply if the weather is not looking great.
2. Prepare Your Guests
Reach out to your guests and prepare them. Have you ever arrived at an event and felt like you weren’t fully prepared or dressed properly? You can avoid leaving your guests with that feeling by communicating weather and venue updates. For example, if it rained earlier that day and your venue is completely outside, chances are feet (and shoes) will come across some damp grass. If your guests receive advance notice, then they can come dressed appropriately. Prepping your guests for unexpected weather-related hurdles will surely enhance their experience.
3. Rent/Reserve a Tent
If you can afford it, get a tent. If you can’t afford it, you can put one on hold with a deposit. Most rental companies that offer tents will give you up to 72 hours prior to your event to decide on keeping the tent or not. Additionally, those rental/tent companies often allow you to use your deposit and rent other items from them. It’s a win-win.
4. Embrace the Rain on Your Wedding Day
Photos in the rain can be magical. Why not embrace the rain and grab some epic umbrella photos! The L3 Team always carries clear umbrellas as part of our toolkit for that very reason. 5. Have a Plan B
If you are having an outside ceremony and/or reception ALWAYS, ALWAYS have a plan B. Consult with your venue and plan for a rain scenario. Be sure to convey that plan to your vendors. They need to be prepared for a quick change if necessary.
6. Know When to Call It
“Calling it” means deciding to make a change to your ceremony, reception, or some aspect of your wedding due to the rain. Make the call in time. It is only natural to want to hold out to see if the weather will break but that can be a recipe for disaster. The last thing you want is for one of your guests to be injured or “soaked” when they are running for cover. If you’re unsure of what to do, follow the lead of your coordinator, officiant or venue contact.
7. Trust Your Vendors
Central Florida vendors deal with rain all the time and they are familiar with Florida weather. Trust their instincts and seek their advice. If a vendor makes a change because of the rain, due to liability or safety issues, remember that they are looking out for you and know that those decisions are never made lightly.
8. Make the Most of It
Remember your wedding day is about celebrating your love, rain or shine. Some of my favorite weddings have been affected by rain. It may not be what you planned but oh the stories you will have to tell. And the pictures are amazing!

9. Make Your Guests Comfortable
When unexpected weather strikes it’s important to make sure your guests are comfortable so they can enjoy the experience as much as possible. Provide amenities like towels and blankets to keep guests dry during the festivities.
10. Get Umbrella Favors
Provide stylish umbrellas as favors for your guests, ensuring everyone stays dry and umbrella favors can add a charming touch to your wedding photos.
11. Have Dry Storage Area
Have a designated dry storage area for important items, like the wedding cake or sentimental decorations.
12. Have Fun even if it Rains on Your Wedding Day
As Rebecca and Kelly have stated — have fun! Embracing rain on your wedding day allows you to break free from traditional expectations. It’s a chance to be spontaneous, let go of perfectionism, and enjoy the day as it unfolds.
– Shannon Tarrant of Wedding Venue Map
In conclusion, your wedding day is a cherished moment filled with love and joy, but the unpredictable element of weather can add uncertainty to your celebration. Embracing the possibility of rain opens the door to unforgettable moments and enchanting photos. By following the practical tips shared such as communicating with the venue, preparing guests, having a Plan B, and trusting experienced vendors, you can navigate any unexpected showers with style and grace.
