We love a great Central Florida proposal story, don’t you? When we heard about this romantic surprise marriage proposal, we knew that we wanted to feature Nicola & Marques.
Share with us when and how you met each other.
Memorial day weekend 2015, I was invited to a beach party in Cocoa Beach, FL by a good friend of mine. Once I arrived at his apartment I noticed this very handsome man parked next to me, loading stuff into his car. My friend, Brian, introduced him to me as his cousin. When he turned to me and smiled I knew right then at that moment that he would be my forever! We have been inseparable ever since!
What are your favorite things to do together as a couple?
We love to try everything together from roller coasters, traveling, to watching sports together. We are both huge football fans. I am a Florida Gator and he is a Florida State Seminole so we have always had fun as a house divided.
How long were you together before getting engaged?
5 years, 1 month, 2 days
Share your romantic surprise marriage proposal story…
My fiancé had always told me that I would never expect when he would finally propose. He is not the type to propose on a holiday or anniversary so I was always kept guessing.
June 27th, 2020 was a very warm and humid night here in Deltona, FL however my fiancé had convinced me that it was a perfect night for me and “our” daughters to watch a movie on our deck. I wasn’t very fond of the idea due to the heat and mosquitos, but any time spent as a family is a great time. As we gathered outside to chose a movie… he seemed to be stumbling through his phone to be able to find one. He looked at me and said…”watch this real quick…I have to go in the house”. He pressed play to a video which was all photos of him and I (over the last 5 years) to music.
I started crying immediately as I knew that the time had finally come. As I sat on our deck and my daughter recorded my reaction, I continue to watch the video. He recorded himself in different scenarios proposing to me… but then changing his mind making me smile. Then the video said “stand up, close your eyes, and don’t open them until you hear my voice.” I did so expecting to see him on his knee once I opened them.
Instead, when I finally heard his voice I opened my eyes to see my parents, his parents, our family, my best friend, his best friend and more all standing next to me. He had arranged for everyone to be there. I immediately broke down as not only did it mean the world to me to have everyone there but this was a time of COVID. Even though there was a pandemic, everyone came masked up and ready to witness our special event.
After he proposed, and of course I said Yes, he continued to play the video in which he had all of our other family and friends that couldn’t be there record videos to us congratulating us. He even reached out to all of my family in England and I got to see family that I hadn’t seen in a long time. It was an amazing evening, one I will never forget. I am so lucky to be able to watch our whole engagement video whenever I want to relive such a special night.
Who did you tell that you were engaged first?
Most of the people that I would have called were there to witness the proposal. I was excited to change my status to engaged on social media, however, so that is how everyone else found out.
Tell us about the ring!
I couldn’t have picked out a more perfect engagement ring. It is a solitaire round diamond on a white gold band. The diamond is set in a cathedral setting with small diamonds on both sides. It is the prettiest thing that I have ever seen.
What are you most excited about wedding planning?
I knew from day 1 that I was going to marry Marques. Therefore, I have had over 5 years to plan a wedding in my head. I am looking forward to making my vision reality and making everything beautiful for our special day. I can’t wait for our close family and friends to witness us becoming one.
If you’ve already decided, what is your venue?
The Estate on the Halifax in Port Orange
Why did you choose that venue?
We fell in love with the venue at first sight. Everything from the location to the quaintness of the venue made me know that that was where I wanted to marry my best friend. We will be getting married in the beautiful chapel and we look forward to spending the night as newlyweds in the guest house on the property.
Congratulations Nicola & Marques on your romantic surprise marriage proposal!
