It’s Spotlight Day, where we introduce you to incredible Orlando wedding vendors and share the stories behind these companies who help Wedding Venue Map couples have their best wedding day.
Hiring the right wedding vendors is so important on your wedding day. The vendors help create the backdrop of every moment, every picture, and every memory. It gives us great pleasure to introduce this week’s vendor spotlight, Mercedes Tamayo of The Cake Studio.
When people ask “What do you do?” how do you answer?
I am a custom cake artist specializing in wedding cakes. I enjoy making dreams come true and creating a truly memorable sweet ending for your wedding celebration.
What did you do before you did this?
I had been a hospitality professional, specifically a Sales & Catering Manager/Director. I have always loved being in and around the hospitality and event industry.
When and how did you get into the wedding industry?
I first started in the wedding industry as a catering sales manager over 25 years ago. My first hotel was the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, FL, a luxurious, historic 1926 property in very high demand. One can say that I earned my stripes there, then I moved to Orlando to continue my hospitality career.
How long would you say you have been doing what you do today?
I’ve been doing cakes professionally for over 20 years (since approximately 1998).
How did your work evolve to get you where you are today?
As a creative person, an artist’s work evolves over time as new inspiration and techniques emerge. I’m constantly looking into new trends and techniques to create truly unique “sweet works of art.” I also enjoy challenging myself and pushing the envelope when it comes to design details.
What is your favorite thing about what you do? What’s your WHY?
I truly enjoy working with engaged couples who are excited about celebrating their love for each other. I enjoy creating something very special that represents the two of them. I truly believe that when God gives you a very unique skill and talent, it should be shared. My purpose is to help make wedding dreams come true.
However, my real WHY is my son. I want to be able to show him that in order to achieve what you want in life, you have to work diligently towards it.
Tell us about your most memorable event.
I’ve been involved in several memorable wedding events. I’ve had everything from 10-tiered wedding cakes where I’m up on a ladder topping the cake, to others where I’ve been up on a ladder (again) hanging a swing from a hotel airwall track to make sure it will support the weight of a five-tiered cake. There’s never a dull moment in the wedding industry, that’s for sure!
What’s the best part of your job?
The best part of doing my business is that no two of my wedding cakes have ever been alike. Each and every one is unique and different because I make sure to add a personal touch to every cake for the couple.
What fun fact would people be surprised to learn about you?
Fun fact about me is that I was originally an architecture major. I eventually switched to major in Business Administration, but those design and structures classes sure come in handy these days. Another fun fact… I’m an avid ballroom dancer and a certified Zumba instructor!
What is the best compliment you’ve received from your clients?
One of the best compliments that I receive frequently from my clients has to do with my attention to detail. It’s really nice when they see and appreciate the detail work that goes into these cakes.
Name three unique venues that you enjoy working at and why
Mission Inn Resort – Not only is Mission Inn a gorgeous property with multiple unique ballrooms and banquet spaces, but their sales & catering team is second to none! They are a pleasure to work with.
Ocoee Lakeshore Center – They have beautifully appointed banquet spaces and I’m super excited about their new expansion, which will more than double their space. Can’t wait to see it finished!
Rosen Hotels and Resorts – Whenever I arrive at any of the Rosen Hotels, I’m greeted by true hospitality professionals. With multiple properties, they have many ballroom space options as well as outdoor ceremony locations. I know my way around every property and always find a friendly face at any of their locations. Their sales & catering teams are talented, flexible, and very accommodating.
Here is what some previous couples had to say…
“Mercedes is amazing at her craft. She sits with you long before your event to work out each and every detail to make sure that everything you want is expressed. Upon seeing our wedding cake, I could not have imagined it better myself. Mercedes’ creation was complimented by everyone who attended, and the time and detail of her work show how much she loves what she does. Her flowers were so delicately made, some guests thought they were fresh flowers! Her prices are very reasonable and will work with anyone on any budget! We cannot thank The Cake Studio enough for your amazing and delicious creation.” – Vanessa Villegas
“Mercedes was more than helpful throughout our wedding planning journey. She gives attention to detail and really strives to get you everything you picture. This is more than just delicious cake & there is nobody I would have rather helped bring me and my husband’s vision to life! She truly is an artist and I can’t wait to get more yummy treats from her in the future!” – Hannah Jackson
“Thanks for your magnificent cake. You made it happen as it was in my dream. Thanks for all your effort putting it together. Stephen and I loved it and so did our guests.” – Jocelyn Pichardo Signore
