We reached out to Helen Tillem, the Director of Events of the Orlando Science Center to share some more information about their Unveil wedding showcase.

Tell us more about the event. 

Unveil is Orlando Science Center’s annual wedding showcase. We invite couples who are wedding planning to see our event spaces dressed up and give them the opportunity to meet with some of our favorite wedding vendors. Couples can leave with a clear picture of how their wedding venue can look and a list of all of the vendors they need to start planning the wedding of their dreams. 

Why did you decide to host this Orlando Science Center wedding showcase?

While we offer site visits any day of the week, we are often open to the public while couples come to visit which can make it a little harder to envision what our spaces could look and feel like for a wedding.  We host Unveil to give them an opportunity to see our spaces after hours, with the right lighting, décor, and placement of everything. 

We also LOVE working with our preferred vendors and Unveil gives our favorite vendors the opportunity to show off why we love them so much! 

Share a bit more about the event – what was the experience for the couples who attended? 

Couples that attended Unveil were able to see all of our event spaces set for a ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception, helping them to envision what their wedding could look like at one of the most unique event spaces in Central Florida.

While planning Unveil, it was very important to provide couples with the opportunity to meet all of the vendors they could need when wedding planning.  We made sure that there was at least one vendor from each category at Unveil, making it a one-stop-shop for couples.

Why is the event is called Unveil?

When we sat down to brainstorm what we wanted from our showcase, we realized it was important to show a side of the Science Center that people don’t get to see during a regular visit. We wanted to uncover, or UNVEIL, all of the fun a couple could have by choosing to celebrate with Orlando Science Center. During the day, the Science Center is an amazing museum to explore but it can be transformed into an incredible backdrop for your affair and no two weddings look alike.

What did you think surprised the couples the most who attended?

All of our wedding packages include access to all three of our spaces, DinoDigs, Our Planet, and the Terrace.  Couples will come for a visit thinking that they want to use our spaces a certain way and by the end of their visit, they end up falling in love with the uniqueness of our exhibit halls and choose a different way to use our spaces.  During Unveil, couples might start out enjoying the spectacular view of the sunset on the Terrace, and leave wanting a reception full of Dinosaurs!

How is it helpful for couples to attend a wedding showcase?

When wedding planning, I think it’s always helpful for a couple to use vendors that come recommended from a venue.  These vendors are often recommended because they work well in the venue space, know what to suggest to maximize the event experience, and will offer great advice on what they’ve seen work and not work in the event space.  Attending a wedding showcase at a venue gives couples the opportunity to not only see the event spaces set up, but also meet with vendors that the event space recommends.  This makes the wedding planning process less overwhelming and streamlines the number of conversations that need to be had during the planning process because everyone is in one place, at a wedding showcase.

DinoDigs

Dance until extinction alongside dinosaurs in DinoDigs! This one-of-a-kind event space boasts dramatically high ceilings and epic photo backdrops, ensuring a memorable reception or cocktail hour.

Guests are sure to have a pre-historic good time taking a selfie with one of many dinosaurs, digging for fossils, or roaring alongside an animatronic dino. Whether guests are dancing the night away or exploring all of the unique features of a dino-filled room, everyone is guaranteed to have an unforgettable evening. Aloft Orlando Downtown

What services does your company provide most often to couples getting married at this venue?

The Aloft Hotel in downtown Orlando can serve as a one-stop-shop for happy couples on their wedding day! With over 11,000 sq ft of event space, we can host everything from the rehearsal dinner to the send-off brunch! Out-of-town guests can enjoy a discounted group rate while enjoying all that Aloft has to offer- W XYZ Bar, a resort-style pool, 24-hour fitness center, and the convenience of being within walking distance to downtown’s restaurants and nightlife.

What is your favorite event space at the Orlando Science Center?

It’s hard to beat hosting an event with T-Rex as the centerpiece! That is our favorite by far our favorite space in the center.

What tip or helpful information would you share with couples booked at this event?

Plan ahead! Often those who are ahead of the game will enjoy the best rates and the most perks!

If you provided a design look or tablescape, share more about why you chose to provide what you did?

We crafted a faux greenery wall as the backdrop to our tablespace for a few reasons. Not only is Spring right around the corner, but Aloft is the only hotel downtown with a large, outdoor patio and we wanted to highlight this unexpected greenspace. The W XYZ Patio offers safe social distancing options accompanied by memorable views of Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

 We provide wedding photography services!

What is your favorite event space at the Orlando Science Center?

There are so many great spots to take photos at the Science Center as well as have your event but my favorite is by far the Terrace! It’s the perfect spot for both!

What tip or helpful information would you share with couples booked at this event?

When searching for a photographer, make sure you find someone comfortable shooting in low-lighting conditions, or be sure to choose someone off of their preferred vendor’s list.

The Bridal Finery

What services does your company provide most often to couples getting married at this venue?

We provide complete styling for the bride which includes the dress, veil, hairpiece, jewelry, lingerie, and more. We offer two unique ways of shopping for the dress as well as private bridal appointments in our boutique.

What is your favorite event space at the Orlando Science Center?

My favorite event space at the Orlando Science Center is the Sky Bridge which features floor-to-ceiling windows that allow for beautiful natural light for photos. Hanging heart-shaped crystals that glimmer in every color provides the perfect backdrop for the entryway to your wedding venue.

What tip or helpful information would you share with couples booked at this event?

Because the Orlando Science Center is such a fun and unique venue, we recommend couples consult with their photographer/videographer on if they have been to this space before and are familiar with the best places to capture images or shoot video. There are endless photo and video opportunities and it’s very helpful when your hired wedding pros have been to the venue prior to your wedding day. This will allow for a smooth day of celebrating and knowing your team is going to take excellent care of you.

What tip or helpful information would you share with couples booked at this event?

The Science center is a unique and cool event space but also has very tall, dark ceilings so I highly recommend spending money on cool-up lighting and definitely investing in a photographer who knows how to photograph there and has done it before.

 The most popular options for the Orlando Science Center are the reception DJ, music and microphones for the ceremony, music for cocktail hour, a photo booth, a cake pinspot and uplighting!!

What is your favorite event space at the Orlando Science Center?

I LOVE DinoDigs!!!  What could be cooler than partying with dinosaurs!?!!

What tip or helpful information would you share with couples booked at this event?

Honestly, it has nothing to do with DJs.  The best thing a couple can do to get the most out of this venue is to take advantage of all the incredible photo locations!  Besides the awesome dinosaurs, you can get pictures downstairs in NatureWorks with gators, and turtles in the background!  Or up in the Observatory with the telescope!  Step outside and there’s a lake, a field, just so many places to take some epic wedding pictures!!!!  

If you provided a design look or tablescape, share more about why you chose to provide what you did?

We provided the Blue Uplighting in Our Planet and the Blush Uplighting in DinoDigs.  Lighting can have such a huge effect on a space, and it couldn’t be more true than at the Orlando Science Center! The dinosaurs come alive with our Uplighting! When we light the room and chairs in Our Planet I feel like it just brings the spaces to life!!

The Terrace

With panoramic unobstructed views of Downtown Orlando, and a sky full of stars, the Terrace will capture every inch of wedding magic. Tie the knot with a ceremony on The Terrace, enjoy cocktail hour as the sun sets in the distance overlooking the City Beautiful, or dance the night away under a canopy of market lights during a moonlit reception. The Terrace invites each couples’ unique style, taste and personality to take shape in our most customizable space. It also provides plenty of room for dinner, dancing, and all of your wedding celebrations!

Our favorite event space is the Terrace where our booth was located. The spectacular downtown Orlando skyline in the distance combined with the epic sunset makes it the perfect Central Florida outdoor wedding venue.

What is your favorite event space at the Orlando Science Center?

#1 Dino Digs!!! since me and Stan, the South Dakota T-rex go way back! #2 is a tie between the veranda with those sweet sweet sunsets overlooking Downtown Orlando, and the area in front of the globe is in the running because who wouldn’t want to get married in front of the Death Star or the moon?! You can customize the globe with ANYTHING you want!!! ANY-THING!

What tip or helpful information would you share with couples booked at this event space?

Congratulations on booking a fun venue where your guests will definitely remember the evening! There are many unique unity ceremonies and ceremony additions you can have during your wedding ceremony, including ones that involve SCIENCE!!

What services does your company provide most often to couples getting married at this venue?

Our most popular package for the Orlando Science Center is DJing and Hosting for Ceremony, Cocktail hours, and Receptions, along with uplighting and a photo booth.

What is your favorite event space at the Orlando Science Center?

We LOVE the rooftop for receptions!

What tip or helpful information would you share with couples booked at this wedding location?

When it comes to DJing, make sure you check to see how long they need to set up prior to the start time. If you choose to have your ceremony across the street at the Museum, followed by cocktails and reception at the Science Center, they may need to adjust their package to include additional set-up staff.

Pavone Events

What services does your company provide most often to couples getting married at this venue?

We’ve only done one wedding at this stunning venue and the couple hired us to do Full Planning. Quite honestly, it was the perfect venue for our couple to wed. We designed a Nerdy Chic & Chemistry Inspired Wedding. And as an ode to the venue, we incorporate hidden dinosaurs throughout the design. Coincidentally, we have a full planning wedding in November this year. It seems to be the trend when it comes to planning at this venue. However, we anticipate that we’ll see a mix of our planning services package with future couples.

What is your favorite event space at the Orlando Science Center?

This venue is unique and memorable. We like the combination of both indoor and outdoor spaces. However, hands down, we LOVE the SunTrust Terrace!! The view and the sunsets are breathtaking! The perfect space for a stunning ceremony as long as mother nature is on our side. Also, the Sky Bridge sets the right tone for an incredible couple’s First Look. So romantic.

What tip or helpful information would you share with couples booked at this venue?

To embrace every space’s theme and beauty yet be creative enough to add subtle nods/decor that will stand out and showcase who they are as a couple. To ask questions and keep an open mind to possibilities.

If you provided a design look or tablescape, share more about why you chose to provide what you did?

We had the opportunity to design a beautiful ceremony on the Suntrust Terrace. We were inspired by OWPR’s new Crescent Moon structure. We are seeing more couples envisioning a boho-meets-romantic vibe for their special day, and we wanted to bring that vision to life. The florals were muted tones of white, pink, sand, dusty rose, and dark orange and added Fuschia and yellow as a pop of color. We added greenery to the crescent moon with a few blooms to give it a more minimalistic look. The sunset color inspired us to incorporate metallic elements to reflect the light.

We used Sleek Ghost Chairs to draw the viewer’s intention towards the ceremony structure and into the beautiful sunset. The chairs also allow the natural beauty of the terrace to shine through. Uplights in iridescent colors were placed throughout the design to give it a more realistic look. When the sun went down the terrace, market lighting added the perfect magical effect. We had a Bubbly Champagne bar, and every guest who visited was welcomed with a glass of champagne garnished with Hibiscus flower. Needless to say, it was very popular with the guests.

Our Planet

Looking for a ceremony space that is out-of-this-world, or a fun interactive cocktail hour, then Our Planet has it all. Say “I Do” in front of a suspended globe with projected images of Mars, the Moon, or even objects from galaxies far far away. Invite the whole world to be a part of your wedding with Earth as a backdrop, or choose the Death Star and rule the galaxy together!

Watch as guests unearth the wonders of Our Planet during cocktail hour with an array of engaging hands-on exhibits and let science set the scene! Guests will shake things up on an earthquake simulator, make and launch paper airplanes, and predict clear skies for your celebration at our weather station.

We are full-service wedding entertainment focused on interactive musical experiences. Our most popular packages are our Dueling Pianos!

What is your favorite event space at the Orlando Science Center?

For us, it’s a photo-finish tie between the DinoDigs and Our Planet. Our crew is full of Dinosaur Geeks and Space Nerds, so it’s always a hot debate between which is our favorite!

What tip or helpful information would you share with couples booked at this venue?

Don’t shy away from the “Geek Chic!” Orlando Science Center has amazing spaces and something so unique that often, folks want to “balance” it by hiding away some of their own nerdiness. Forget that! This is your day, make it yours all the way! We once saw a couple have the Our Planet globe set up like the Death Star from Star Wars for their ceremony. It may seem like it would have been silly or detracted from the sincerity of the moment. Quite the contrary, it was a touch of personality that made the ceremony all that much more special!

What services does your company provide most often to couples getting married at this venue?

Live guitar music and DJ services, a great combo to give couples the class and elegance of live music for their ceremony, cocktails, and a relaxing and romantic ambiance for dinner. Then switch to DJ for fun and dancing after dinner, the best of both worlds!

What is your favorite event space at the Orlando Science Center?

I personally love doing events on the patio under the stars and fresh air but have done many events inside for a cool ambiance as well, and sometimes couples have utilized BOTH the indoors and outdoors spaces (i.e. outside for the ceremony, then inside for dinner, or vice versa).  Yes, I often set up sound systems in 2 different areas, I’m used to moving around to different rooms or locations for different portions of the evening.

What tip or helpful information would you share with couples booked for their wedding at this venue?

Be creative, take advantage of the museum’s displays for cool and unique pictures!

Orlando Ceremonies by Kelly

What services does your company provide most often to couples getting married at this venue?

As a wedding officiant, I have three ceremony categories that couples can choose from, including those that I design with and for a couple based on their love stories, passions, etc. I believe the Mix and Match and Custom categories appeal most to Science Center couples because they are typically not looking for a traditional type of ceremony. They want something that speaks to them as a couple and/or a ceremony that lends itself to the venue they have selected.

What is your favorite event space at the Orlando Science Center?

I am totally biased when it comes to this question. My son and daughter-in-law were married at the Science Center, across the street, in front of the lake, as the sun went down and night fell. It was absolutely magical. But truth be told there is not a space at the Science Center that I don’t love. Each area has its special perks.

What tip or helpful information would you share with couples booked at this venue?

The Orlando Science Center event staff is wonderful to work with so be sure to take advantage of their knowledge and expertise. Look through as many pictures of past events as you can and talk with someone who had their ceremony there, if possible. There are so many possibilities with a wedding ceremony and reception at the Science Center. Plan early, take your time and really explore all of your options.

Tootles Event Sitters provides on-site & off-site (hotel, timeshare, condo, etc) babysitting services for weddings & events. 

What is your favorite event space at the Orlando Science Center?

Definitely, the fourth floor with the dinosaurs, space explorations, news center, and the outdoor area to see all of downtown Orlando & the night sky.

What tip or helpful information would you share with couples booked at this event venue?

Even though the science center is a kid-friendly location, the littlest guests often still get tired out and bored. Having on-site or off-site child care available allows them to have a space to unwind in when the event has become too much for them.
